Ever wonder why “normal” women don’t seem to age as gracefully as the A-list stars walking the red carpet in their 40s, 50s, and 60s (yeah, we see you, Helen Mirren)? Well, probably not, as we all know they are on a strict regimen of diamond-encrusted facials, chef-prepared meals, personal training sessions, and — naturally, er, unnaturally — discreet nip/tuck appointments with their favorite tight-lipped surgeons. Well, these leading ladies claim they don’t require all that much of the latter to conquer that whole “getting older” thing.
The inevitable truth is that if you want to stay young, you will have to put in the effort. We asked 5 well-heeled Asian women for their beauty secrets.
Her Beauty Secret: “I don’t believe in people who tell you to moisturize all the time. Everyone’s skin is different, and in our humid climates, sometimes less is more. One beauty tip I cannot do without however is to apply eye cream religiously every night. I started using eye cream when I was sixteen and I am glad that I did. The eye skin is drier and more delicate than the rest of our body so it is important that we keep it hydrated and moisturized so it stays supple and ages at the slowest possible pace.”
Her Beauty Secret: “I don’t think that “anti-aging” is something that only people in their 40s or 50s should be concerned about. I feel that even someone in their 20s or 30s can embark on an effective anti-aging regime to give their skin the best possible future. I quit smoking when I hit 30, and that was the best thing I have ever done for my skin. I use an anti-aging night cream every night and I believe that my efforts have paid off, because my friends tell me my complexion looks better now than it ever did before.”
Her Beauty Secret: “I am a big believer that there are no ugly women, only lazy ones. I have dabbled in Botox for my frown lines and I am not afraid to admit it. I think it helps me look fresher and more serene. My big beauty tip is to extend your skincare regime to your neck which is a neglected part of the woman’s body. I use my moisturizer and sunscreen down to my décolletage and from the look of my neck, I would say it is money well-spent.”
His Beauty Secret: “I work as a makeup artist and I am used to handling women’s skins. The biggest beauty tip I can give to all women out there is to NOT pick at your skin. I have seen gorgeous women who have the worst scars and blemishes on their skin because they cannot stop their compulsion to squeeze, prod and pick. Instead, invest in weekly microdermabrasion sessions to clean your pores and prevent breakouts. If you have a zit and are in a fix, try some lemon juice on a cotton bud to dab on your skin, it is a natural astringent and can reduce the redness of your pimple.”
Her Beauty Secret: “The most important tip is to use a good sunscreen and other skin shielding protective from hats to sunglasses. I wished my mother told me this when I was young because now that I am in my 50s, I see the difference between the women who have baked in the sun and those who have protected their skins from young. I would say the latter look as much as 5 years younger.”
