It seems like only yesterday when I first started off as an intern in the local office of a major global fashion magazine about 15 years ago. Besides worrying about my performance at work, the thing that weighed heaviest on my mind back then was what I should wear for my first day at work. In fact, I spend a good 2 weeks trawling shops all over town for a good outfit with my meager budget. However, I was very sure that no matter what I decide upon, I would pair them with my mum’s ox-blood red ‘Pierre Cardin’ pumps which she wore only for church on Sundays and the occasional special night out. How I managed to cajole her to let me near them is another long story altogether.

From an early age, I knew that one has to take baby steps to complete the big picture. Before I could afford a Chanel 2.55, I was happy to start off with a tiny black quilted coin pouch. Not one that’s born with a silver spoon and unfortunately never a gal that’s besotted with generous suitors, my collection of trinkets from Tiffany’s started with a simple sterling silver pendant and not some dazzling stones. Right now, I’m still working on my Birkin fund but at the moment, I’m pretty contented with the jingle and jangle that my Hermes bangles made when they bump against one another. On a similar note, I always believe that one should not stinge when it comes to beauty and skincare. After all, we only have one face to begin with.  Be it a simple moisturizer or an aesthetic treatment, taking baby steps early will make the inevitable journey towards aging easier and more bearable. Just as Father Time leaves his marks little by little on one’s face, one should take baby steps with anti-aging procedures overtime to look youthful but age appropriate and like yourself and not someone else. Just as no girl is too young to own or wear Chanel, here’s RSB top picks on ‘baby steps’ of some of the hot tickets in the field of Aesthetics Medicine to reverse minor damage, unleash your skin’s full potential and age-proof your visage towards ‘graceful aging’.

‘Baby Peel’— Milk Peel

Chemical peels are amongst one of the earliest breakthrough in skin care used widely and effectively to address a truckload of dermatological conditions from greasiness and acne outbreak to fine lines and pigmentation.  However, if the very word of it conjured up images of a taut, red-faced Samantha Jones after her first chemical peel in ‘Sex & the City’, rest assure you that the newer generation of peels are much more forgiving although inevitably, one has to be prepared for a certain degree of dryness and flakiness post treatment.  If even such minimal downtime is putting you off from chemical peels, consider having a Milk Peel instead. The Milk Peel utilizes an ultrasonic peeling system as well as specific gentle fruit acids to lighten dull, sallow complexions, surface pigmentation and blemishes so that cleaner and clearer skin is achieved. It’s so gentle it’s like mama holding your hand for your first ballet class instead of shoving you in the deep end of a traditional chemical peel.

‘Baby Botox’— MicroRefine

Botox injections are the single most popular aesthetics procedure in the world and given its rampant and at times uncontrolled usage, this has somewhat earned Botox a bad name.  Akin to the brushes of a professional make-up artiste, sometimes less is more when it comes to administering Botox injections. MicroRefine, the “Mini-Me” version of the famed wrinkle eraser is by no means less effective in producing awe-inspiring results. Especially if you are not too ‘wrinkly’ to start off with, this unique Micro-BOTOX® injection technique is excellent for refining and rejuvenating. Departing from the usual dilution dosages for Botox, MicroRefine consists of microinjections of miniscule doses of BOTOX® evenly distributed over the face and neck to diminish fine wrinkles in the treated areas to prevent them from getting etched in as permanent scars of time. In addition, these micro dosages will cause sweat glands and sebaceous glands to shrink and atrophy, resulting in smooth clear skin without loss of movement in major facial muscles. If you have always been tempted but afraid to have your first injection, consider this baby step of Botox therapy. Frozen, never, Fabulous, always!

‘Baby Filler’— Revitalift

Ever wanted more luscious lips but is put off by the slew of botched up jobs that gave an ‘aquarium’ of ‘kissing fishes’ when you flipped through images of C-list celebrities and society ladies wannabes? If volume is not your primary concern, and you are cued for more subtle changes such as smoothening away fine lines, instantly hydrate and adding on a luscious sheen to dull and chapped lips; Revitalift lips, the ‘micronized’ version of lip filler will be the treatment to ask for.

“This simple ‘lunchtime’ procedure consists of microinjections of ultra-fine natural hyaluronic acid carefully placed to revitalize and rejuvenate lacklustre lips affected by smoking, drinking or just simple aging,” explains Dr. Chua Han Boon, medical consultant with The Sloane Clinic. “This treatment is deeply hydrating and minimizes fine lines, giving lips a much needed energizing boost of youth without the fear of pumping up their volume disproportionately.”

Likewise, Revitalift Undereyes is an excellent treatment of choice for those with crepey skin and fine undereyes lines. Its hydrophilic nature addresses the woes of sunken eyes and dark eye circles without the risk of lumpiness that sometimes is hard to avoid with traditional undereyes fillers even in the hands of the most experienced aestheticians.

‘Baby Volumization’— Restylane Hydrolift

As we age, our face loses volume much like that of a deflated balloon. Voluma High Definition Lift can help to address some of these age-related issues, restoring the fullness of youth effortlessly and safely with FDA approved natural fillers. However, if you are at the point when some degree of lifting and enhancement  is desired without the need for a complete overhaul, the Restylane® Hydrolift will be an excellent baby procedure. With Restylane® Hydrolift, small calculated quantities of natural hyaluronic acid are carefully placed under the skin of the lower face and cheeks using a novel injection technique to give tired saggy faces a subtle lift. Besides replenishing the loss of one’s own hyaluronic acid, studies have shown that Restylane® also stimulates your body’s own production of collagen, explaining why over the next 2-3 weeks, you will notice further lifting of your facial contour, together with more radiant, luminous skin!

‘Baby Thermage’— Thermage Eyes

With the incorporation of its latest CPT technology, Thermage remains one of the most popular and effective modality of non- invasive skin tightening and rejuvenating procedure  although it has been around for ten years. One of the earliest tell-tale signs of facial aging is thinning and wrinkling of the undereye skin. If the skin under the eyes is crepey, no amount of eye cream will correct this flaw and make-up will tend to flake. Thankfully, a ‘baby Thermage’ can now be done with a special ‘baby eye tip’ that’s developed specifically to treat periorbital aging. Thermage delivers patented monopolar Radiofrequency (RF) energy to your skin using the ThermaCool device. When the treatment tip touches the skin, it uniformly heats a large volume of collagen in deeper layers of the skin and its underlying tissue while at the same time cooling the outer layer and protecting it. This causes deep structures in the skin to immediately tighten. Over time, new collagen start to form and our skin will tighten further over the preceding weeks to months. In fact, with the special eye tip, it is now safe to apply Thermage directly on the eyelids which will help to correct mild droopy eyes and early hooding!

  1. when it comes to Botox, less is more. I prefer my botox done in a more natural, softer manner. And it works for me.

  2. I had loads of good review about Thermage from magazines and beauty websites. Thanks for the tip. Never knew that Thermage can be done selectively for the eye area alone.
