With every season, proper skin care is essential for skin health. In the deep of winter, our skin needs to be well moisturized and protected from extreme cold while in summer, it needs to be carefully protected from the harmful UV sunrays and the extreme heat. Summer can bring on a whole host of skin problems especially for those with oily skin. An increased in sweat and sebum secretions get deposited on the skin and hair, causing the skin to lose its glow and the hair its shine.  It’s no wonder how summer’s beauty dilemmas culminates into a plethora of beauty woes—- acne outbreaks, underarm sweat stains, ingrown body fuzz and hair as limp as stale linguine. Fret not as RSB compiles the top tips and tricks to fix beauty bummers that threaten to sabotage your summer days.  If you come prepared, the only thing you’ll be worrying about this summer is your social calendar.

Zit Attack

It is common to get acne outbreaks as the temperature soars, at times migrating south to the chest and back making it a pain for swimsuit season.

Quick Fix: Summer calls for deep pore cleansing, especially for those with oily skin. It is important to cleanse your face thoroughly before going to bed. Use a good skin toner to remove those final bits of grub and refresh your skin. An ideal choice will be a flower –based toner that contains rose, lavender or jasmine essential oil. Sloane Inc Lavender Calamine Clarifying Water not only help soothe skin irritations, pacify pimples and mop up excess sebum but it’s amped up with antioxidants to purify and protect your skin from premature aging. The astringent action of lavender oil helps in binding and tightening the skin tissues and thus arrests excessive oiliness of the skin while maintaining good pH of the skin to give it a clear, matte finish. The best body zit-obliterating method is to treat the affected areas with a scrub that contains salicylic acid like Bioré Pore Unclogging Scrub. Finish off with a layer of Sloane Inc Clarity Water which boasts a potent blend of AHAs and BHAs that help to fight acne and gently exfoliate at the same time to lighten stubborn marks, refreshing the skin to a healthy glow.

Power Treat: Delivering results that rival its namesake, The Glamour Peel is not one but a combination of 3 professional peels carefully selected to deliver a quick all-round complexion improvement by addressing numerous skin concerns simultaneously to work your skin to its summer best. Together with a series of oxygenating masques and regenerating concentrates, this treatment aims to reduce oiliness, minimise pore size, lighten marks, smooth out fine lines and boost overall hydration.

Sweaty Pits

The hotter days are making you sweaty and a little stinky too. Underarms sweat stains are not a sexy look and to smell bad or of overpowered deodorant just adds on to your summer beauty woes.

Quick Fix: Since your sweat doesn’t actually smell until it comes in contact with bacteria on your skin, minimise that with an antibacterial body wash. Choose a strong antiperspirant that contains aluminium chloride and perhaps wear that before bed to give it plenty of time to work ahead of the following day. Opt for an aerosol version which is less sticky and won’t look chalky on skin

Power Treat: Excessive sweating or hyperhidrosis of the underarms can be effectively treated with Botox injections. Microinjections of BOTOX® into the hair bearing areas of the underarms can prevent sweating for months by blocking the release of the neurotransmitter, acetylcholine, from the nerve endings that causes the glands to produce sweat. “It has been shown that underarm sweating will be decreased by 90% within 48 hours and full effect will be seen within one week of treatment,” says Dr. Chua Han Boon, medical consultant with The Sloane Clinic . “Simultaneous disappearance of odor associated with decreased sweating although not consistent is widely reported.”

Bikini Fuzz

Excess oil production in the summer can plug up hair follicles and cause unsightly and irritating ingrowns, often leaving tell-tale dark marks even when they heal.

Quick Fix: Use a gentle salicylic acid scrub on the area to clear away the dead skin cells follow up with a pad that contains either salicylic, glycolic, or hydroxy acid. Shaving is the single most important culprit so opt for waxing strips or get it done professionally to keep your nether region well groomed and spots free.

Power Treat:  If you have had enough of unsightly bikini fuzz and irksome ingrowns, well, this is the thing for you – laser and IPL permanent hair removal. Laser and IPL hair removal are the most advanced, most effective, and safest treatments for permanent hair reduction and with the right machines, both lighter and darker skin types and hair can be treated safely and effectively. This eliminates the problems of repeated trauma and skin irritation from constant shaving and epilation thus saving one from ingrown hairs and skin darkening. In fact, existing ingrowns and shaving bumps are effectively removed at the same time with such methods of hair removal. Depending on the density, thickness and colour of the hair, it takes between 4 to 6 sessions done 4 to 8 weeks apart for good, long lasting results.

Stretch Marks & Cellulite

Guys at the beach and by the pool are just psyched to see skin. It’s not just the lads but the ladies themselves can’t help checking out other ladies too!

Quick Fix: Boost your confidence and downplay your marks and lumps with a good fake tan. A tan is a great look for summer and makes the skin look smoother. Try YSL make-up Leg Mousse for gorgeous sun-kissed pins and slather on some moisturiser for a fresh summery glow.

Power Treat: Over the counter creams are mostly ineffective against stretch marks and cellulite. Fortunately, like other forms of dermal scarring, stretch marks respond fairly positively to laser treatments. The Fraxel Light is an innovative fractional laser resurfacing technique that utilizes the FDA approved, Fraxel Restore Laser technology with visibly good results against white or slivery stretch marks. The laser energy emitted from this system stimulates cellular renewal, self- repair and collagen replenishment to improve the quality, texture and appearance of the treated areas after 6 to 8 sessions. Thermage has been successfully used to deal with unsightly cellulite and is hugely popular amongst Hollywood A- listers in recent years. It utilizes radiofrequency waves aimed at restoring the elasticity of fibrous septae and thus strengthens the overlying skin to improve the “orange-peel” appearance associated with cellulite. In addition, the increased perfusion rate associated with Thermage improves health and metabolism thus promoting further repair of tissues of the areas treated.
