Excuse me, are you a lady?

[By Tania Hui]

“What’s so wrong with vanity? It’s different from narcissism, you know. It’s not about admiring yourself, it’s about taking pride in your appearance.”— Tom Ford.

Words of wisdom from design icon Tom Ford, who single-handedly revived the dying house of Gucci in the early 90s and placed her firmly back onto the fashion radar to where she is today. Currently with his own label under his belt in both men and ladies bespoke fashion and ready to wear, Tom Ford, both as a brand and as his own man, is a vision of immaculate grooming. I couldn’t agree more with the fact that one got to take pride in his or her appearance. Beauty may be in the eye of the beholder and comes in all shapes and sizes but as far as grooming is concerned, that’s largely a universal language. Being well groomed creates good impressions and as far as I remember, first impressions count more than ever in our present society.

So what are some of the commonest beauty banes of bad grooming that one tend to overlook but really should not? What can be done to bring us just that notch higher? Read on to find out more….

Shine no more

Do you dread looking at yourself in the mirror at mid-day because you know for sure that your makeup would be completely gone by then? Is your nose so shiny that you could almost see your own reflection in it? You are definitely not alone if you suffer from oily skin and the unattractiveness of it disgusts you. The layer of greasy sheen is caused by sebaceous glands working in overdrive to produce an excessive amount of oil which makes one appear scruffy and unkempt.

TIP: Having a good skincare regime with the correct products is the foundation to successful oil control. Make sure you have a good stash of blotting paper within easy access especially when the sun starts climbing. Boasting a beautifying blend of AHAs and BHAs, the Sloane Inc. Clarity Water is an all-rounder potion that does it all. It gently exfoliates, controls sebum and shine and offers anti-aging benefits as well as tones up skin. This super light formulation can be loaded into the Sloane Inc. Nano-Mister which slips perfectly into the smallest clutch possible for a quick spritz to remove residual impurities and dead skin cells for a refreshed feeling and healthy-looking glow before you touch up your make-up after your office lunch break.

1198TREAT: To get to the root of the problem, consider the Smoothbeam Laser, widely considered as the “platinum class” of laser therapy with unparalleled results in the treatment of oily skin and active acne. This FDA approved treatment modality is suitable for all skin types from the fairest to the darkest, and effectively treats oily skin by emitting a wavelength of light that generates heat in and around the overactive, oil producing sebaceous glands, altering the structure of these glands and thereby reducing their activity, leading to long term clearance of shine and acne after a program of 6 to 8 sessions.

Bleeding Lips

Lipstick color bleeding into the skin surrounding the lips is never a good look. This beauty faux pas tend to affect those with dry, chapped lips especially those that are thinned out and riddled with perioral wrinkles from aging or long standing cigarette smoking.

608TIP: Exfoliate your lips regularly to create a nice base for your lipstick to glide on. An easy fuss free way is to soften your lips with a warm towel follow by a scrub with a soft toothbrush coated with some Vaseline, moving in a circular motion to help remove dry skin once a week. For something less rudimentary, try the sweet tasting, vanilla infused Sloane Inc. Lip Fabulosity Scrub which scrubs and moisturizes your lackluster puckers at the same time. Available conveniently online via sloaneshop.com.

TREAT: You might not be aware of this but microinjections of Botox into the hillocks around the lips can flatten them and ease out the wrinkling that causes lipstick to bleed. Alternatively, a touch of Natural Hyaluronic Acid Fillers can work equally well. To avoid the risk of looking overdone and for those who prefer to keep things natural, consider Revitalift Lips, a special treatment to pump up the hydration and transform your lips from drab to fab with carefully placed tiny doses of small particle hyaluronic acid that boosts your lip’s natural moisture without changing its size noticeably.

Sweaty pits

Underarm sweat stains are socially embarrassing and definitely not a pretty sight. Some girls are just more prone to sweating compared to others and this condition is known medically as Hyperhidrosis. Excessive sweating tends to aggravate any existing body odor making the whole scenario utterly repulsive.

TIP: It is worth trying different antiperspirants and deodorants because they have different active ingredients, and you’ll find some work better than others. Antiperspirants help stop the sweat before it starts with a chemical called aluminum chlorohydrate.

TREAT: Botox is approved and licensed as a treatment for axillary hyperhidrosis and is by far the best non-surgical treatment of choice. Sweat glands require a nerve impulse to activate. Without this stimulation, they won’t secrete. By injecting small amount of Botox into multiple sites in the skin at the apex of the armpit, the related nerve impulse is temporarily relaxed and prevented from reaching the sweat gland. This, in turn, stops sweat production in the treated area.

“All patients report a substantial decrease in sweating within two to five days of treatment and often wish that they had discovered this modality of treatment earlier,” says Dr. Toby Hui, medical consultant with The Sloane Clinic. “Many patients have also reported not perspiring at all following that and repeated treatment is usually recommended at six monthly-interval for maintenance.”

Bikini fuzz

If you are going to wear an itsy bitsy 2-piece swimsuit, no matter how enviable your curves are, make sure your “lady garden” is well groomed.

TIP: Applying waxing strips is an easy and convenient way to get rid of bikini fuzz. But there’s always the dreaded downside of ingrown hair follicles leading to angry, red bumps that can stir up quite an itch! Furthermore, repeated trauma can actually lead to permanent darkening of the skin.

TREAT: For a more permanent solution to your hairy woes, consider Laser Hair Removal. The laser energy emitted damages the hair follicle and halts growth in the treated area, leaving you with fuzz-free, smooth silky skin that you have always dreamt of; putting an end to routine shaving and messy waxing. There are different laser machines on the market that cater to different skin types and hair color to give the best possible results so be sure to check on the credential and expertise of the service provider before you consent to the treatment. If the laser machine used is not a match for you, besides not giving the optimal outcome of hair removal, the risk of laser burns is exponentially raised.

  1. Laser Hair removal has always interested me. In high school I was on the swim team and I grew tired of constantly shaving my bikini area! It was embarrassing to have red marks and stubble almost every day.. Or even worse nasty dark hairs coming out of your bathing suit! YUCK!
After my sister in law began treatments on her bikini area! I thought to myself why not I would love to feel free in my bathing suit! 🙂
