Since the invention of breast augmentation, the aesthetic and reconstructive procedure has been a perennial favourite, topping beauty treatments charts worldwide every year. According to a report by CNN, in 2016, there were more than 300,000 breast augmentations done in the US alone.

Breast enhancement can be categorised into traditional breast augmentation with implants (silicone implants) and natural breast augmentation with fat transfer where excess body fats is first harvested from a separate part of the body via liposuction and injected into tissues in the breast.

How is a Fat Transfer is done?

Both harvesting and grafting procedures leave patient with 5 mm incisions on both the breast creases and the liposuction areas. They usually become inconspicuous within a few months.

Which is more Popular: Traditional or Natural Breast Augmentation

According to Dr Tan Ying Chien, a Plastic Surgeon at SW1 Clinic, registered Aesthetics Surgery in Singapore, while enhancements via breast implants are more common and popular, fat transfer to augment the breast has not fallen out of favour among women.

The primary reason lies in the risk involved; although a traditional breast augmentation allows women the option of any size and shape of their desire, it poses a higher risk as compared to a natural breast augmentation since it introduces foreign material into the body.

“The most attractive thing about fat transfer is that it is a 2-in-1 procedure, allowing one to lose fat in undesired places and enhancing the breast size at the same time.”

However, as enticing as this treatment may sound, not everyone is a suitable candidate. An ideal candidate would be someone with excess fat in undesired places like the torso or thighs and desire only a moderate increase in size.

If you are looking to enhance your breasts surgically, Dr Tan emphasised the importance of choosing highly-skilled and experienced plastic surgeons who can assure your safety and understand your needs.

“After a fat graft procedure for instance, it’s inevitable that some fat cells die, especially during the first week. However, a competent surgeon is able to lower the trauma experienced by the cells, ensuring their survival. At SW1 Clinic, patients can look forward to a more long lasting and predictable result as well because by using advanced technology, we are able to obtain a higher concentration of younger and healthier fat cells.”
