Move over you beer guzzling, free burping and chick scoring fraternity brother in tow, there’s a new guy in town who’s poised to start a brand new bromance with your best bud. He is none other but Brotox— the affectionate moniker given to Botox for men. An increasing number of men are now partial to cosmetic procedures, with Botox being one of the fastest growing treatment requested. In fact, over the last 10 years, the number of men getting these wrinkles erasing jabs has jumped a whopping 258%! Some of the common driving factors include the desire to remain competitive in the job market, to feel more confident in social situations, to close the age gap with a younger partner or to keep up with friends who are ‘aging well’. However, it’s totally understandable why many men are hesitant to make that first move although the idea been brewing for a while. There is a misconception about Botox for men and many fear that it’s the start of a very slippery slope, often heightened by awful tabloid photos of celebrities such as Simon Cowell, Mickey Rourke and pre-Caitlyn Bruce Jenner—all self-confessed ‘Botox aficionados’ who probably took their bromance with Brotox a little too far for their own good. Before you say yes to your new bromance, here are some essentials you ought to know about Brotox, to help start your relationship on the right foot, and possibly live happily after too!

Mars vs Venus

As the age old saying goes, “Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus”. Although it’s the new millennium and gender lines are blurring, there are essential differences between both genders and this holds true when it comes to Botox treatment as well. For the same reason that you would visit a tailor and not a seamstress to get a bespoke, made-to-measure suit, it is important to find a doctor with the knowledge and experience in treating ‘Martians’ to handle your age-defying Botox jabs. Extra care has to be taken in terms of dosage and injection technique to avoid ‘feminization’ of masculinity such as the arching or flaring of brows seen in individuals that are treated overzealously.

Generally speaking, we are looking to soften lines to give a natural, more approachable and youthful look instead of erasing them completely and freeze up all facial movements.” Explains Dr. Toby Hui, senior medical consultant from the SW1 Clinic (formerly with The Sloane Clinic), with a keen interest in male aesthetics. “We’re aiming to make you a good looking forty something, not trying to bring you back to your teens.”

Having the perfect Botox is like having an awesome haircut. A stylist who can work that perfect head of Beyoncé curls might not fare well with clipping men hair. Likewise, always check if the doctor you are consulting has the credentials and working experience with male patients.  Once you have found a doctor who understands your anatomy and the unique way your facial muscles react to Botox, stick to him or her and chances of ‘Botox gone wrong’ will be greatly diminished.

Age is just a number

In a survey done by the American Society of Aesthetics Plastic Surgery, men between the ages of 25 and 44 are among the most common age group to seek out cosmetic alterations such as Botox microinjections. There is no cut-off age, neither is there a golden number to when to start. Facial muscles are generally thicker in men compared to women. With age, especially if one is very animated with loads of facial expressions and movements while speaking or pushing weights in the gym, lines and furrows start to form earlier in life and etched in as permanent dermal scars with time. These tram-track lines running across their foreheads often give men an aged and unapproachable appearance, something which can be easily corrected with your new BFF, Brotox. As long as one does not go overboard and space out his treatment at appropriate intervals, you can grow old but you don’t necessary have to look your age or worse of it!

When less is more

There has been a very significant change in how men approach aging in the last 10 years or so. They think some wrinkles are ok and can possibly add to his charm and masculinity, but when they see their grandfather peeking through, they know it’s time to slam on the aging brakes and give in to Botox and perhaps some fillers, laser treatments or even plastic surgery. While one might rightfully assume that higher doses of Botox is required to deal with the thicker musculature in men, more often than not, less is more when it comes to Brotox. Unlike women who can be highly specific in what they want, men just want their problem fixed and never want to look obviously ‘done’.

While women can get away with nary a hint of Crow’s feet, I champion a touch of smile lines to add to the debonair of the modern Adonis.” Says Dr. Toby Hui. “I often treat my male clientele with Micro-Refine, a unique Micro-Botox® injection technique departing from the usual dilution dosages for Botox that is excellent for refining and rejuvenating stressed out faces without running the risk of being frozen into wax-liked mannequins.

Micro-Refine consists of microinjections of miniscule doses of Botox evenly distributed over the face to diminish fine wrinkles to prevent them from getting etched in as permanent scars of time. In addition, these micro dosages will cause sweat glands and sebaceous glands to shrink and atrophy, resulting in smoother and clearer skins that are less prone to a mid-day oily sheen!

Banish sweat stained pits

Another great but probably lesser known reason to embrace your new found bromance with Brotox is its use against excessive sweating in targeted areas such as the underarms and palms in Hyperhidrosis Therapy. Especially during the hotter months of the year or for those engaging in sports and racket games, constant perspiration can be socially embarrassing or get in the way of a firm hand grip that affects the chances of a win. Almost all patients notice decreased sweating in less than a week and often wish that they had sought this treatment option much earlier in life to avoid the inconveniences associated with Hyperhidrosis. Results which are often hailed as ‘life-changing’, typically last for 6-8 months after a single session of treatment, and can be repeated thereafter for maintenance of sweat, and consequently, odour-free days.

For whatever reason it may be that prompt you to foster a new bromance with Brotox, bear this in your mind— “Guys don’t need a lot of choices, they need the right choice and that’s it.”
