Super solutions for a super clear skin

Acne (acne vulgaris, common acne) is a disease of the hair follicles of the face, chest, and back that affects almost all males and females during puberty; the only exception being teenage members of a few primitive isolated tribes living in Neolithic societies! It is not caused by bacteria, although bacteria play a role in its development. It is not unusual for some women to develop acne in their mid- to late-20s.

Whether you are plagued with that occasional zit or suffer a full blown, over-the-top outbreak, studies have shown that combination therapy works better in the long term for solving your acne woes. This means that you should be using more than one of the below suggestions to keep your skin clear and blemish-free.

Quick Fix: For those who cannot think beyond that dinner date tomorrow, then quick fixes are certainly for you.

Pimple cream; Certain pimple remedies will dry up the zit in no time, so dab a little gently on the affected area, wait and pray. However, a word of caution, the downside of some pimple creams is that they can also dry up skin so never over –apply  pimple meds to face, or you will run the risk of redness, peeling and irritation.

Try: Oxy10 (boots.com) or Clear Bliss (sw1shop.com)

Home Fix: Witch hazel is a cheap astringent that can be found in many homes. Dab a little witch hazel on your pimples to dry up the lesions. Other home remedies include apple cider vinegar, and salt water. Dab a cotton bud in to the vinegar or a bowl of salt water, and then apply liquid to your pimples. Some have found they help reduce redness and inflammation though some patience is needed.

Clinic Fix: If you want a quick fix, try prescription oral medications from your doctor. They can come in the form of oral antibiotics, oral contraceptive pills or even Accutane. Do speak with your doctor about dosages and side effects so you can make the right decision. Other in-clinic options involve using lasers and lights to fight combat acneic skins, and they may provide some relief for blemish, troubled complexions without the side effects of oral medications.

Try: BBL Forever Clear for its anti-acne and skin clearing effect. Its no downtime acne-clearing and future spot prevention prowess makes it a firm favourite amongst the acne prone.

Life fix: There is no such thing as an unhealthy lifestyle yet a sparkling clear skin. Your skin will reflect your lifestyle and habits whether you like it or not, so if you covet flawless skins, start with a healthy diet and lifestyle. Quit smoking and protect your skin from the sun, cleanse your skin twice a day and always remove all traces of makeup before you retire for the night.

Try: If you want to give your skin an added boost, try taking some vitamin supplements, in particular Vitamin B, C and omega-3 fish oil.

Makeup fix: It’s possible to wear a full face of makeup without it looking overdone or garish. When you’re broken out, you’ll want to do two things: conceal and detract. Firstly, create a clean surface by priming your skin and applying a full-coverage foundation. Use a fine-tipped concealer brush to touch up where your breakout is worst, and then set it in place with translucent powder and a large fluffy brush. The second step is to create a point for roaming eyes to fixate upon, like a prominent lip or exaggerated eyeliner. Our personal preference is sweeping a bright pop of colour on your lips, like the bright pink.

Try: M.A.C Cosmetics Pro Longwear Lipcreme’s “Love Forever” ($24, maccosmetics.com), so eyes divert there instead of your less-than-flawless skin.

  1. Hi there, Thanks for the useful tips and tricks to fight zits. I am troubled by pimples since my teenage years and one thing I have found that really works are these tiny steroid injections that my local derm used to give me. they settle big zits in 24 hours or less. what are your thoughts?

  2. You mean this little things actually works, I am impressed. How long do we have to apply for you to works-Home Fix.

  3. Please don’t do the smoothbeam laser. I went for acne scars and I trusted the doctor/nurse and let me tell you, it has been a month and I got dark spot on my face after the treatment. so on top of my scars now I have to deal with dark spots on my face.

  4. I had my first Smoothbeam laser treatment a week ago, and already oil production is way down. I didn’t have terrible acne, just little bumps here and there. And since I’m going the Fraxel route in the future, I’d like to take care of the lingering acne issues than have it mess with the Fraxel results. I’m anxiously awaiting the final result in a month.
The doctor and his staff were very friendly and knowledgeable and made my treatment experience as enjoyable as possible (as possible for someone to zap you repeatedly with a laser). With the numbing cream, the laser felt like someone was poking you with thumbtacks. Not bad at all.

  5. Smoothbeam Worked for me! I’ve had 2 treatments already and I saw a difference after the 1st treatment. My coworkers tell me they see a great improvement. My oil production had reduced, and I can actually say that my BIG cystic acne (hormonal) are somewhat controlled. Usually I’ll get like maybe 3-5 big ones, after the first treatment I only had 1. I have 3 more treatments to go, and if all goes well, I will have this procedure done on my back as well.

I had vertually no pain at all. Numbing cream was applied for 30 mins prior to treatment and it just feels like a shot of cold air.
