Curiosity is innate to humans, but sometimes, a wave of embarrassment hits us before we can even ask questions. Unfortunately, this happens when we’re supposed to be at the peak of relaxation – a.k.a. mid-facials.

Facials should feel like a treat, especially after everything our skin has to endure. But here’s the thing: it’s not easy to relax when you’re leaving everything to a total stranger. They will touch your skin and apply products you might have never seen before. So trust us on this – a few questions won’t hurt! Below, we answer some pressing questions you might be embarrassed to ask your aesthetician.

Question #1: Do facials hurt?

The answer depends on what your skin needs. You only need a gentle hydrating facial if you don’t have acne or blemishes. But if you do, you’ll need a more intensive approach – extractions. This is the manual process of removing blackheads, whiteheads, and acne to clear out your pores. Though extractions are completely safe, they can be painful, especially for your first time. Just remember to let your aesthetician know your pain threshold beforehand!

Additionally, it’s normal to feel some discomfort after your facial. After all, your skin has been through a lot in a short amount of time. Make sure to communicate this to your aesthetician. They will advise you on what products to use at home to soothe your skin.

Question #2: Can I achieve my skin goals after one session?

Unfortunately, no – but that doesn’t mean that you won’t, ever! As with any beauty treatment, facials are a recurring commitment. The first sessions address your skin concerns, whereas the succeeding ones will improve them. Your skin needs to adjust to all the ingredients and products before achieving your skin goals. It’s a work in progress, as we like to think of it!

Question #3: Why did my skin get worse after my first facial?

As we’ve established earlier, your first facial won’t give you the skin you’ve always dreamt of. But that doesn’t mean that it’s not working or that it’s a complete flop.

Facials draw out impurities from deep within your pores and bring them to the surface. You may experience purging (when your skin breaks out after using products for the first time) after your appointment. When this happens, it’s a sign that the treatment thoroughly cleansed your pores and it’s working. Rest assured, it won’t happen again, so trust the process!

Question #4: How often should I get a facial?

The rule of thumb is every three to four weeks. However, it also depends on your skin type. For oily or acne-prone skin, it’s best to schedule monthly facials to help with clogged pores and acne breakouts. (Of course, you can also come in for monthly facials if you have clear skin to maintain your complexion.) But if you have sensitive skin, limit your facials to once every two months or whatever works best for you.

Question #5: Do I still need to do my skincare at home if I get regular facials?

Yes, of course! A skincare routine helps maintain the benefits of your facials and improves your skin. This also helps reduce the frequency of your spa visits, saving you money down the road. A win-win, right?
