If there’s anything we can remember 2022 by, it would be the slew of skincare lessons. The past year was huge on natural, nourishing ingredients, and come 2023, we might see more of that. Except they would be much better, more creative, and more innovative! We predict that this year has a lot of never-before-heard ingredients that come with revolutionary skin perks, and we are all here for it.

Some new, others old, here are the hottest ingredients of the year.

Witch Hazel

Witch hazel was huge years ago until people ditched it because of its potential drying effects. But this 2023, it’ll have a moment of resurgence.

As a natural astringent, it’s highly effective in reducing sebum and minimising pores. But it can be too intense for sensitive skin, causing them to dry out. Thanks to the gentler formulations available today, witch hazel now comes with moisturising benefits. Some toners combine witch hazel with snow mushroom, lavender, and hyaluronic acid. These soothing and moisturising ingredients balance out the astringent and boost hydration on the skin’s surface. That’s a win for both witch hazel and your skin barrier!

Emblica

Emblica comes from the extract of Indian gooseberry or Amla. This essential ayurvedic ingredient will be the next big thing in the skincare industry because of its jam-packed skin perks. Emblica is a potent antioxidant that fights free radical damage in your skin. (Which is, by the way, the second most harmful damage next to the sun’s UV rays!) It also fights signs of ageing, boosts collagen production, and lightens dark spots. In addition, Emblica is also packed with vitamin C, another powerful antioxidant, so it’s like getting twice the skin benefits!

Colostrum

Colostrum is the first breast milk that a woman produces during pregnancy. We call it ‘liquid gold’ because it has all the essential nutrients good for the body, including your skin.

This ingredient contains minerals, growth hormones, amino acids, and immune protectant factors. All these combined help repair your skin barrier, promote collagen promotion, increase skin elasticity, and fight ageing. Aside from these, colostrum can help soothe inflammation and reduce sensitivity in certain conditions, such as atopic dermatitis.

Bakuchiol

Bakuchiol earned the moniker “nature’s retinol” because it offers the same benefits with a gentler approach. Pronounced bah-koo-heel, it was widely used as a herbal medicine to heal, soothe, and disinfect the skin. However, it can definitely do more than that. Bakuchiol triggers collagen production to help reduce wrinkles, fine lines, and uneven spots. It also hydrates and plumps your skin – a considerable difference from retinol, which can dry out your skin. Because bakuchiol is derived from natural plants, it’s very gentle on the skin and is perfect for every skin type (yes, even the most sensitive!).

Ceramides

Ceramides are essential lipids that are naturally found in the body. It basically works like glue that bonds your skin cells and keeps your skin barrier intact. Ceramides nourish your skin barrier and seal in moisture to keep your skin youthful and healthy. They also help fight signs of ageing by keeping harmful aggressors at bay. And since this ingredient keeps your skin plump and hydrated, it also helps soothe dryness and irritation.
